Communication is a very important way of improving relationships especially one that involves Parents and Children because it helps them to express their needs, wants and concerns to each other. Maintaining a good relationship between Parent and Child is very necessary and can be sustained by the following;
1. Be available:
Parents need to constantly make out time amidst their busy schedules to stop and talk about things with their children without distractions. Switch off the TV or radio set and put away your handsets, let them feel your presence, your undivided attention to be able to communicate effectively with you.
2. Show empathy:
This involves coming down to your Child’s level and making them recognise it. Give them a warm hug to cheer them up when they are sad or praise them whenever you can. In such way you will be able to establish a good relationship with your Child and get to understand them better. This helps them to express themselves better with you.
3. Be a good listener:
When you listen to your Child, you help your Child feel loved and valued, this way they are free to open up and tell you anything and everything. Ask them how they spent their day, the challenges they faced in the course of their day and discuss possible ways of handling such challenges should they experience them next time, and so on.
Communication is the life-wire of every relationship. Being truthful and calmly communicating your feelings, using your talking moments as teachable moments and in return listening carefully to what your child says will help sustain a healthy communication with your Child/ren
