Do you have an idea of what your child’s response would be if asked the question “Who are you” or “Tell me about yourself”?.

As a global village where social media and the application of artificial intelligence in different spheres of life has revolutionized the world, values are eroding and more people are losing their identity which leaves them confused as to their roots and vulnerable in a global village.

Some of the ways of walking your child gradually to an awareness that gives this sense of identity are as follows:

  1. Tell the History: Explain to your child where he/she comes from, such as: hometown, country/state of origin, key cultural identities (Food, dressing, festivals etc), culture of the previous or current locality depending on the age of your child. Further information here can be the meaning of their names/surnames and reasons for certain family practices.

  1. Share Your Values: Simplify to your child those values that set you apart such as honesty, hard work, taking pride in oneself, respect for elders and life, good name of the family welcoming others etc.

  1. Express Observations and feedback: Recline and observe your child as they put the values in practice, do not hesitate to correct them when you observe them doing the opposite, such correction helps them gradually internalize the values needed as they build their individual identity.

A person's understanding of their own and other's identities develops from birth and is shaped by the values and attitudes prevalent at home and in the surrounding community.
